Tooth Grinding (Bruxism)

Bruxism, or tooth grinding can lead to a variety of dental problems.  Immense forces are generated by the jaw muscles and transmitted to the teeth causing broken teeth or fillings, worn, chipped, and sensitive teeth.  In some cases, teeth can split and need to be extracted.  Bruxism can also cause pain and tightness in the jaw muscles, headaches, earaches and other facial pain.

There are a variety of reasons why people grind their teeth.  Some believe it is a manifestation of stress, some believe it is due to the way the teeth come together in the bite, and others believe it is a sleep disorder.  Whatever the reason, treatment should not be delayed.

Dr. Lee or Dr. Jaime will conduct a thorough evaluation and if it is determined that treatment is necessary, a custom appliance is fabricated for night wear that prevents further wear and protects both teeth and restorations from the detrimental effects of grinding.
